They say it takes money to make money. However, I would tweak that comment by saying, it takes smart money to make a profit. I've been involved in several opportunities in the past, in which I found I was spending more money than I was making.
We often get caught up in the hype, throw money away as if it were free flowing, and then wonder why our bank accounts are negative. What constitutes a good move when spending money on your business?

Education is important as long as it is practical. Are you learning things you can institute easily to move your business to the next level? A problem with many programs is that they often lead to endless up-sells. If you are simply listening to seminars, webinars and workshops without taking action, that will lead to profit, you are most likely just being busy. I don't know how many times I've signed up for stuff only to go on overwhelm. I ended up having to unsubscribe and end memberships, because I was focusing on too many things at once.
Are you working for incentives because they sound exciting, but cause you to make unwise money moves? I admit I am often attracted to shiny objects. I like having fun. When I was in direct sales, I found I would add a little here and there to make a goal. How much are you actually paying for those free prizes? Do the math. OK, I admit, I still count with my fingers.
Are you making business connections that lead to income, or are you simply socializing? It's critically important to develop relationships with potential clients, but if you are in the wrong market, you will end up with nothing to show for it.
Are you putting on costly large events, or more intimate get togethers, where you can truly address the individual needs of a client, and qualify them for your business? I'd personally rather have a few strong clients, who are highly qualified, than a bunch of kooks and nut jobs. The later are typically higher maintenance, and tend to flake out. I've also found that at large events, you can lose people if you do not have a system and team working flawlessly to attend to each individual.
Are you paying yourself first, before paying all the bills, etc.? I admit, I have not always been great at that. However, it's essential. Pay yourself 10% of everything you make and then hide it somewhere where you can't get to it. Be careful not to stick it into a bank that goes nuts with bank charges. They seem pretty charge happy these days. When you reach a certain amount, invest the interest into something that will create additional streams of income.

Good luck. Let me know how you keep your profits flowing? Leave a comment and please feel free to tweet this post.

I’ve worked over 30 years as an actor, and I believe that those in the arts, free-lancers, and many entrepreneurs are hard wired for making an income that is, unfortunately, on a roller coaster. One day, you make $3,000 and then you’re off for 2 months. When you average it all out, it’s probably less [...]
