Entrepreneur vs Business OwnerEntrepreneur or business owner?  Is there a difference?  This question was posed to me on Twitter after I posted an update about an event I was having.  At first, I was wondering why someone would ask me that question, but then started to think about it.  Below is simply my take, and may not reflect yours.

When you think of business owner, the first thought that comes to mind, is the proprietor of a brick and mortar establishment you might see in your neighborhood. This person may be a member of a local Chamber of Commerce. Generally a proprietor works a set amount of hours per day, and is expected to be on call whenever needed, no matter what.  He is both the boss of others and a glorified employee himself.

An entrepreneur, has an idea or a project that he or she wants to take to the next level.  That may mean expanding the idea, creating automatic income streams, and distributing to others via targeted networks. The business may or may not require a physical building.  Instead of a store, an entrepreneur may have a product, invention, service, book, or a large project such as a bottled water, a wellness resort, etc.

Whereas a business owner is generally content operating the corner donut shop, an entrepreneur has dreams that are in the process of coming to fruition.  The dream constantly expands and changes.

Are you an entrepreneur, a business owner or an employee?  From my observation, I have seen many who call themselves entrepreneurs, but are essentially working another JOB in the form of an independent contractor.  Much like a hair dresser, income is generated appointment to appointment.   If appointments dry up, so does the business.

An entrepreneur will find ways to monetize the project in more ways than  one. That way income flows in passively and continuously.

An entrepreneur creates systems to allow ultimate freedom.  Instead of working for the business, the business works itself.

An entrepreneur reaches for the stars to land on the moon. A business owner locks up when it’s time to go home.

An entrepreneur takes chances and is not afraid to try something new.  A business owner performs the same tasks over and over and is reluctant to change.

If an entrepreneur wants advice, he or she goes to those who have created multi-million dollar projects.  A business owner, in the company of others in a similar situation, wonders why he or she is struggling.

If an entrepreneur needs capital to fund a project, he or she will find a way to acquire it.  A business owner will board up his shop and get a job.

There is nothing wrong with either as long as happiness and fulfillment are attained.  Ultimately, that’s what we all want.

Rebecca, I enjoyed reading your post. I belong to the unified Tribe and I tweeted your post. also started following you and I hope you will do the same http://www.twitter.com/rossjoyner Your points are all very well taken. I thought I would add although you in directly said this: You will find that a business owner has his store and that’s all he thinks about during work hours. an entrepreneur, NEVER quits thinking about the next project. I am an entrepreneur and often catch myself thinking 3 to 6 months and sometimes 1 year or more in advance about the next projects I will be involved with. Anyway Great article and for me it was very thought provoking. Check me out a http://www.rossjoyner.com
