I admit it. I royally messed up the other day. I made an appointment on the fly. The other party called to reschedule at the very same time I have a weekly business conference call. I absolutely forgot and got a call "Where are you?" Egg started dripping down my face. I’m usually compulsively punctual for everything. It’s almost like a disease. So, no one is perfect.
Have you ever encountered chronic flakes while networking your business? It’s pretty annoying. Thankfully, they don’t last long. Here are a few of the worst flaky traits, in my opinion.
- Impossible to reach. They never return phone calls. Plus, their voicemail has no message, so you don’t even know if you actually reached them.
- They show up when they feel like it. When I was an ambassador at a local chamber, I would always show up on time. Several others always did too. A bunch never did. They obviously wanted the title of Ambassador without doing the work. Very uncool.
- They RSVP Maybe. I personally believe that maybe should be banned from Facebook, or any other event invitation. What in the world is maybe supposed to mean? In my experience, it means no. So why not just RSVP no instead? Now I can see if you aren’t quite sure at the moment. OK, then RSVP maybe, but change it when it gets closer to the event. Yes or no. Make a decision.
- They blow you off on an appointment. I had two occasions where I had booked a massage. I was going to pay for it. The person didn’t show up BOTH times. She is no longer in the business.
- Saying you are going to do something and then you forget about it. Example: A person says they will email you with a referral, website, etc. You never hear from them. Put a note on their business card to remind yourself. I actually was guilty the other day. I was going to send someone a pet sitter reference. I forgot to make a note. I got home with a bunch of business cards and couldn’t remember which one I was supposed to email. Like I said, no one is perfect.
- They do not honor agreements such as making a payment. How can someone purchase something and not pay for it? They quietly disappear hoping you will forget about them. That’s plain inexcusable and completely lacks integrity. I’ve had people claiming to be leaders in their business do that to me. Kind of a weird way to get referrals, don’t you think?
